More Than Floors – When Wood Takes the Lead
At Hørning, we often say that a wooden floor is never just a floor. But sometimes, it’s not a floor at all.
Our product range goes far beyond what lies beneath your feet. In fact, wood is an architectural medium we’ve worked with in many shapes and forms. A recent example of this is the bespoke wooden staircase crafted for the new auditorium at Universitetsbyen in Aarhus, a key project where functionality, durability, and aesthetics had to meet on equal terms.
Here, Hørning supplied solid parquet block in our finest Exquisit grading for the staircase, resulting in a bold yet refined centrepiece that quite literally elevates the space. The choice of timber was not incidental, it was selected for its visual harmony, long lifespan, and ability to stand up to the daily rhythm of student life.
Where Learning Meets Craft
This staircase isn’t just a transitional space. It’s a place for gathering, pausing, discussing, part of the academic landscape where students think, speak, and connect. That’s why quality matters. The staircase is not only built from PEFC-certified wood, ensuring responsible forestry and traceability, but also constructed with a deep respect for craft.
Such projects require more than just good materials. They demand skilled hands.
A Floor Layer’s Precision, A Carpenter’s Vision
Collaborating closely with some of Denmark’s most experienced floor installers, we were able to realise the full potential of the material. Every detail, every join, every line was carefully executed to honour the architectural intent and create a staircase that is more than functional. It is sculptural. Seamless. Strong.
At Hørning, we know that wood can do more than carry weight. It can carry meaning. And whether it becomes a floor, a stair, or something in between, we treat it with the same respect. Because when craft and architecture meet something remarkable happens.
In Universitetsbyen, you don’t just walk into a space of learning. You rise with it.
