A Star Beneath Your Feet – Celebrating Arne Jacobsen and the Craft of Hørning

To mark our 100-year anniversary, Hørning is proud to unveil a commemorative art print that pays tribute not only to one of Denmark’s most beloved architects, Arne Jacobsen, but also to the enduring craftsmanship beneath some of his most iconic spaces.

The poster designed and hand-printed by Danish artist Jakob Ingvorsen and his collaborator Camilla Thuv, takes inspiration from the mesmerising floor of the City Hall of Aarhus, where Jacobsen’s vision comes to life in a meticulously laid, star-shaped parquet pattern. Viewed from above, the floor unfolds as a geometric artwork crafted from several wood species, brought to life by Hørning’s carpentry tradition.

A Homage to Design That Lasts

Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) is one of the great names in modern architecture and design, known internationally for his clean lines, functional elegance, and holistic approach. At the City Hall of Aarhus, which he designed together with Erik Møller in the late 1930s, Jacobsen's focus on detail extended all the way to the floors.

This project is a celebration of that detail. Not just a surface to walk on, the floor at the City Hall of Aarhus is a structural artwork in itself, an architectural canvas shaped by vision, repetition, and natural materials. Its three-dimensional parquet star, composed of dark and light timber, reflects both precision and play.

The Artist’s View

Ingvorsen, who trained as an illustrator at the University of the Arts in London, describes his interpretation of the floor as both homage and exploration:

“The floor at the City Hall is a masterpiece of craftsmanship, designed and executed under limitations, yet with immense creativity and discipline. It merges form and function in a rare and deeply impressive way. Up close, it’s beautiful. From a distance, it becomes a work of art.”

The print itself is created using traditional screen-printing techniques. Every colour has been hand-mixed, every line hand-drawn, and every print is slightly different - just like the wooden floorboards it represents. The tactile quality of the paper and the depth of the ink honour the physical presence of wood and the touch of human hands.
