Maintenance - Varnishing

Always follow the varnish supplier's instructions.

During the varnishing process, a varnish film forms on the surface of the wood with a thickness of a few hundredth millimetres.

The varnish can contribute to emphasise and preserve the natural colour of the wood. The varnish's properties are important, not only to the floor's wear resistance but also to safety, gloss, etc. Usually, varnished floors will preserve their appearance for a long period before they need re-varnishing. In rooms where no outdoor footwear is used, re-varnishing will typically not be required for many years. However, in places with high traffic intensity, such as shops, frequent re-varnishing will be required.

Re-varnishing should normally take place before the varnish is worn through, because it is difficult to obtain a sufficiently homogenous surface by re-varnishing worn-through areas after cleaning and sanding. On very worn floors where the varnish may be worn through, the floor must be sanded down, i.e. go through a restoration process during which all varnish is removed.

In order to prevent problems with the varnish forming bonds between planks, in particular, we recommend that a brittle primer varnish be used before final varnishing.
